Where the official UAE employment rules live
Employment rules in the UAE change, and free zones can differ from the mainland. This guide points to the primary sources so you can check the current rule yourself rather than trusting a forum post.
Who sets what
- MOHRE — mainland employment: work permits, contracts, wage protection, end-of-service, and complaints between employer and employee.
- ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) — entry permits, residency and Emirates ID.
- Free zone authorities — companies registered in a free zone are administered by that zone; its rules and contracts can differ from mainland MOHRE procedures.
- u.ae — the official UAE Government portal, which links to the current service pages for each authority.
What to check before you sign
- Which authority your prospective employer falls under (mainland or a named free zone).
- That the job title, salary, benefits and probation in your offer match the contract you sign.
- Which party carries the cost of your permit and medical — this should be stated in writing.
- Notice period, probation terms and end-of-service treatment.
If something goes wrong
Mainland disputes are raised with MOHRE through its official channels. Free zone disputes go to the relevant free zone authority. Keep contracts, payslips and written communication.
